ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Simulated Workplace Leadership Series (SWLS) is made possible by a generous grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission and partnership with the West Virginia Department of Education. The program empowers student leaders in career and technical education (CTE) programs throughout the state to actualize their full potential, build their leadership capacity, and positively impact their local community. The program incorporates three components: live leadership workshops, an online self-paced video series, and leadership legacy project.
Students will participate in four, live leadership workshops on a foundational leadership topic. During these live sessions, students will engage in collaborative learning led by an expert facilitator from The EdVenture Group, Inc. Each leadership workshop will include an engaging wrap-up activity for students to apply their newly-gained leadership skills. To earn completion, students must attend the workshops live or have an approved absence and submit each sessions lesson as proof of review of the session recording.
Leadership 101: Your Leadership Signature
Students will define leadership, identify qualities of a leader, categorize their unique leadershipstyle, and apply leadership fundamentals to their CTE environment.
Communication & Delegation
Students will identify effective communication and delegation styles, explore the difference between engagement and empowerment, and create a strategy to infuse these skills into their CTE environment.
Leading Effective Teams
Students will identify the importance of relationship building, define collaboration, and identify and apply effective collaboration strategy to their CTE environment.
Students will define and identify their personal brand, foster skills for future employability, define their circle of competence and apply their unique competitive edge to their future CTE industry.
self-paced video series
Simultaneous to the live workshops, students will independently participate in a four-module online learning series designed to build their capacity for innovation and design thinking. The four modules below include a video component and follow-up activity and should be completed in the order included in the video channel. Students should submit their work for review to earn completion for the course via the button below.
Leadership legacy project
The final component of the SWLS program is the submission and completion of a leadership legacy project at each school. Building on the individual work from the Self-Paced Video Series, each participating site will collaborate to define a leadership legacy project their school will implement to benefit their community. To be eligible for funding, schools must submit a project work plan and brief, 2-minute video "pitching" their project. Both will be reviewed by SWLS facilitators and WVDE for project approval.
