Video games are sometimes regarded as time-wasters requiring little intellectual capacity. However, research reveals that educational gaming not only offers meaningful and challenging learning environments, but also quite effectively aids in the development of cognitive skills and engaging experimental learning opportunities.
This half-day session will introduce educators to the various uses and benefits of standards-based gaming in the development of successful and progressive learners. Through demonstration, discussion, and play the session will engage and inspire participants to view gaming in a new light—one where students both learn and play via a 21st Century digital gaming experience. Participants will also be given access to a repository of free virtual games designed to improve skills and knowledge for K-12 students. top
Integrating Podcasting in the Classroom
This full or half day session focuses on information and communication skills as they apply to 21st Century applications. Participants learn how podcasts differ from other delivery methods, and receive a brief overview of how podcasts are created. The use of podcasts as a method of instructional delivery is explored through examples created by teachers and students along with other materials. top
This full or half day professional development session is designed to engage educators in the use of an electronic whiteboard to enhance instruction in the classroom. Teachers will have the opportunity to explore the different options available on the board for data collection, interactive activities, and online resources available to align with content standards and objectives. Teachers will be actively engaged in utilizing the technology hardware and software necessary for creating a lesson plan that integrates an electronic whiteboard. top
Wikis are collaborative websites which can be edited by anyone with access. This full or half-day workshop will introduce educators to the uses and benefits of using wikis to promote 21st Century learning. Additionally, participants will be given time to create their own wiki for use in the school or classroom. top
A blog is a website that displays postings by one or more individuals in chronological order and allows other people to leave comments and responses. In this full or half-day workshop, participants will learn how blogs can be used to enhance 21st Century instruction. Also, participants will create their own blog for use in the school or classroom. top
So You Can Surf...Now What? Web 2.0
Web 2.0 is the latest version of the web where users are interacting and collaborating real-time. Participants will be presented with the best Web 2.0 free resources and websites, as well as ideas for implementation into both their classrooms and personal lives. They will be able to identify the characteristics of a Web 2.0 resource, demonstrate an understanding of Web 2.0 and its uses by brainstorming on how they can be incorporated into the classroom. Participants will also learn to use the information provided to access free resources and websites designed with students and teachers in mind and explore the 21st Century Resource page for hands-on Web 2.0 experiences. top

During this session, you will learn how to create your own social network, and how to monitor and protect it from outsiders. Other topics addressed include Internet safety and ethics, cyber bullying, and applications. top
