Biometrics
The Biometric Student Summit will be held August 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the WVU – Engineering Sciences Building. The Biometric Student Summit will be open to any current 7th, 8th and 9th grade students in Monongalia, Marion and Preston Counties in West Virginia and a limited number of Pennsylvania students.
The EdVenture Group, in collaboration with the West Virginia University Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, has several exciting hands-on activities planned for students over these three days. Teacher participants in the Biometric Educators Summit, held last summer, will return to present teacher-created biometric lessons and activities. Tours of the West Virginia University Crime Scene House and WVU Biometric Research Lab are also planned. Students will complete an exciting group project which involves researching biometric careers and tools, while using the information to solve a crime scenario. Career options, educational pathway information and discussions on the importance of biometrics in our society will be presented by experts in the field and school counselors.

The Biometric Student Summit is being funded by a grant received from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.

CITERA
Comprehensive Information Technology Education in Rural Appalachia (CITERA) is a three year project sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through the Information Technology Experience for Students and Teachers (ITest) initiative designed to introduce students and teachers to careers and educational pathways in Information Technology (IT).
The CITERA project is a partnership between The EdVenture Group, The Institute for Scientific Research, Inc. (ISR), Fairmont State College, and 7th through 9th grade students and teachers from North Central West Virginia through summer workshops and yearlong follow up activities.
The EdVenture Group’s role includes curriculum development, teacher and student training, research and evaluation, as well as web design and video creation and editing. The EdVenture Group has also played a key role in the recruitment of teachers and students for the CITERA summer workshops through local and national presentations, as well as the utilization of the Solution Site model to assist in designing teacher lesson plans and to disseminate the project content.
The EdVenture Group is part of a cohort accepted to present project content at AERA (American Educational Research Association) in San Francisco during the Spring of 2006.
Students can sign up for the summer 2007 session at Citera's web site: http://www.citerawv.us. |
Youth Leadership Workshop
Many times youth have the desire to become a leader, but do not possess the confidence or skills to do so. The EdVenture Group, has developed a program entitled the “Youth Leadership Workshop” to assist teens in effectively dealing with these issues.

The purpose of the “Youth Leadership Workshop”, targeted at 8th grade students, is to provide leadership mentoring and team building experiences for students who may not have had the opportunity to participate in other leadership activities, such as student council, but have the desire and potential to become leaders in their peer groups. |
Groups of students for the Youth Leadership workshop are usually limited to 10-12 to allow for the facilitation of small group activities. The workshop is one day in length and is held at the school during normal school hours to eliminate any issues with student transportation.
During the Youth Leadership Workshop, students take part in hands on learning activities and simulated real world scenarios to help strengthen their confidence and assist them in acquiring leadership skills.
The Charles R. Nailler Foundation has provided funding to offer a customized version of this workshop to Monongalia County students.
