TEACHERS
7th-9th grade mathematics,
science or technology teachers
from West Virginia were are invited to apply to
attend a professional development program called CITERA (Comprehensive
Information Technology Education in Rural Appalachia). They
learned about Information Technology (IT) careers through the development
of hands-on educational units that incorporated exciting technologies
including 3-D graphics, virtual reality, flight simulation, and
more!
The goal of the project was to
provide them with the knowledge, skills and resources to
integrate IT into the mathematics and/or science curriculum
that they were delivering in their classroom.
The theme for the 2008 CITERA teacher
institute was the study of 3-D graphics. During the first two
weeks of the program the teacher learned about virtual reality
modeling language
(VRML), identifying classroom applications, worked in teams
to develop curriculum modules incorporating VRML and 3-D graphics.
The modules were field tested during
the last week of the program with 7 th-9 th grade students attending
a CITERA enrichment program. The facilitators for CITERA included
staff members from WVHTCF, FSU, and The EdVenture Group. Follow-up
sessions will occur during the school year with substitutes
provided by NSF.
