VITAL INFORMATION

Technology

7

Four forty minute class periods  (4 days)

The student will explore variety of techniques in designing and building a truss bridge.  The student will become familiar with the history of bridge building and types of bridges, and be able to implement a truss design using 3-D computer modeling.  The Content Standards and Objectives are Technical Development, Academic Application, Problem Solving, Communication Systems, Construction Systems, and Careers.

Exploring technology is a comprehensive action and inquiry based educational program for middle schools concerned with the way humans communicate, manufacture, transport, and construct to adapt to their environment.  It is necessary for all people to understand technology if they are to function productively in society.  This lesson involves students using tools, materials, and processes in a real-world problem solving situation.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • Materials and resources:
    Materials and resources:

A DVD called Crossings, and a VHS called Build'em and Bust'em will be used, and a handout for design sketching for side views of a truss bridge.

    Technology resources:
A web site for designing a bridge from West Point, also VRML design web site showing 3-D example for bridges.
    Students Familiarity with Software Tool:
Familiarity may vary, the students will be paired and each team will download the software used to build the truss bridges.
