Technology Opportunity Centers
The purpose of the Technology Opportunity Center project has been to create a strong technology network that reaches the entire state of West Virginia. The project began in 1996 with a five year grant from the US Department of Education Technology Innovation Challenge Grant. This project created 21 TOC Centers in 9 counties in West Virginia. Funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission allowed an additional twenty-three counties to join the TOC network, bringing the total count to 44 TOC centers in 32 counties across the state.
TOC centers are computer labs located in middle and high school buildings that are used during the day for class work, research, career exploration and in-services. During the evening, free courses are offered to the community. The goal of the free community courses is twofold; (1) to raise the general technology skills of the community and (2) to give community members and opportunity to visit the schools and become more aware of the activities taking place in the school.
All of the TOC centers are still being used in the schools. Several counties also still continue to offer the free community classes. If you would like to find classes near you please call 888-862-0505 for locations and a class schedule.
