21st Century Excellence
The 21st Century Excellence program is a comprehensive program addressing a wide range of factors that contribute to a vibrant learning environment. The program is being implemented in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
The program began with a school wide “Who Took My Chalk?” ™ session. The purpose of the session was to set the stage for change and establish school wide goals.
The second component is professional development. The EdVenture Group provides professional development at the schools based on their individual needs. The sessions have been held on professional development days, or before or after school. Topics range from how to use technology tools such as interactive whiteboards to how to create activities that promote critical thinking in students.
The next component is intensive mentoring. Mentors from The EdVenture Group provides instructional support by mentoring teachers in their own classroom and providing online resources for teachers. The mentors have established web sites for each school where they can provide resources to the teachers electronically and teacher can post resources to share with each other.
The final component is a curriculum based after school program. The After School Excellence program is a series of math or reading lessons aligned to Pennsylvania learning anchors. Most of the elementary and middle school sites participating in the project have implemented this program either after school or as part of their school day.
The entire 21st Century Excellence program is currently being evaluated by external evaluators to measure its’ impact on the schools.
